What we did in the summer holidays...

December 16, 2019

Blackweir Brass are back in action this winter after a long break while we started our postgraduate studies. Before the break we had a busy and varied summer, and we thought we'd tell you about some highlights!

Graduation

We kicked off our summer in style, playing at our own graduation! Lynn, Alex, Nick and Ben graduated, while Will still has a year left. We played mix of our favourite light music for a full St David's Hall, and then quickly ran to our seats to receive our degrees.

Aber Music Fest/Three Choirs Festival

A couple of weeks later we set off to Aberystwyth from Cardiff for our residency at the Aber Music Fest, via Gloucester to open the Three Choirs Festival- that's a lot of driving in one day! Our residency included a recital in the Old College, playing in a composition masterclass, and a orchestral concert in the Great Hall. We also found time to squeeze in some outreach work with Live Music Now at care homes in the area. We all had a great time, especially our trip to the beach!

Greenman

Our next engagement was a different experience for all of us, playing in the band for James Yorkston, a songwriter from Ireland. The Greenman Festival takes place near Crickhowell, which provided us with the opportunity to revisit St Michael and All Angels Church, Cwmdu where we played a recital earlier in the year. It was great for us to see what it is like to play at a festival, and got the full experience- camping included!

Recording

Finally, we recorded a new composition by Penny Squire, in St Teilo's Church, Cathays. The composition is called 'Walking With Nature', which is about our impact on the earth, and is presented in a video paired with footage from Greenpeace.
